Earlham Primary School

Nursery

We know that every parent and carer wants their choice of nursery to give their child the best possible beginning and value the importance of working in partnership with families to ensure that every child enjoys a special start to their school life.

Earlham is an inclusive and welcoming school and our dedicated team of staff are committed to ensuring that every child in our care will be supported to flourish as they take their first steps into their early learning journey.

We instil a love of learning through exciting and stimulating experiences that run through our indoor and outdoor provision and our new, purpose built nursery and extensive grounds will offer a safe and engaging environment where all children are happy, confident and independent.

We offer part-time or full-time provision for children aged 3 to 4. For further information about 15 and 30 hour free childcare, please visit https://www.gov.uk/30-hours-free-childcare

 Our aims

Our aim is to teach the children life skills through developing independence, and knowledge about keeping safe and being healthy. We value parental involvement and help, providing regular updates on what the children are working on.

Emphasis is placed on high quality interactions between adults and children to ensure they are exposed to good models of language and vocabulary throughout each day. We prioritise the development of personal, social and emotional skills, as well as physical skills, as we believe this will encourage the holistic development of every child.

We provide activities which are challenging, engaging, stimulating and exciting. Each week we plan for the children’s learning based on the early year’s curriculum, including festivals relevant to our inclusive and diverse community.

We encourage self-initiated activities, giving children the independence of free choice. Activities are evaluated by the staff and children to see how successful they were and if not what changes need to be made. Please don’t send the children to nursery in their best outfits as we paint, model with glue and even though we wear aprons we often get very messy! Children help to cook every week, they are learning to ‘read’ the recipes.

Children who stay to lunch wash up their own plates and cups, after lunch we have a wellbeing session, we have learned yoga, we also tell each other about our feelings. Milk and fresh water are available at all times. We encourage the children to pour their own drink and to drink from a cup.

Carpet and storytelling sessions.

We read and re-read stories to enable children to learn them and be able to ‘read’ them independently. During carpet sessions children learn about the days of the week, how to take turns to speak and listen to each other and are introduced to early phonics.

The daily routine supports children to feel safe when they know what is going to happen next and to understand about time passing.

Behaviour - Children are encouraged to express themselves safely. We teach the children that they are able to ask other children to stop if they do not like what they are doing. We provide them with strategies to support this. Our Golden Rules are devised with the children and include things such as ‘Use kind hands, feet and words.”

Home learning – Children will bring home a sheet related to our current story, it will invite parent/carers to watch a video of the story with their child, to support their child to draw a picture about the book and tell them about the story. This is a lovely home/nursery link.

We value the importance of working in partnership with parents and carers. In order to work collaboratively, we use the Tapestry Online Journal to share the activities and experiences that your child has enjoyed engaging with at school. It also enables you as parents and carers to contribute to your child’s learning journey by sharing home experiences.
